Angola has registered 5 million voters for the August 2017 General Election, officials have said.
The State Secretary for Territory Administration and Institutional Matters, Mr Adão de Almeida, announced the figures at the close of the first phase of the exercise Tuesday.
The registration started on August 25.
Mr Almeida said the registration was nationwide, including in 200 difficult-access areas.
He told journalists earlier this month in Lubango in southern Huila Province that the registration would be protected till the completion of the exercise.
President José Eduardo dos Santos on Monday said he wanted the 2017 General Election to be held in the spirit of respect for each ones’ convictions and of tolerance.
The president said in his end of year message to Angolans from his palace that all the political actors were expected to demonstrate maturity and responsibility during the polls.
“I desire that all Angolan citizens keep believing in the country and contribute to its development,” the president added.
The August 2017 General Election will be Angola’s third since the end of the civil war in 2002.
Angola has a population of 26 million spread across 18 provinces.
The second phase of voter registration will run from January until March 2017.
